WHAT IS AQIQAH?
Aqiqah, an Islamic terminology, is defined as the animal that is slaughtered on the occasion of child birth. For the child there should be aqigah, on behalf of the child make sacrifice and remove the hair. Hadith (Bukhari).
To offer the Aqiqah/ Sacrifice for a newborn child is the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
WHEN IS BEST TIME PERFORMED?
The preferable method for Aqiqah is that it should be preformed on the 7th day if not then the 14th or 21st and so on. Some scholars have said that this can be carried on till the child has become mature and say Aqiqah can be performed then. However after this period performing Aqiqah is irrelevant.
WHAT ARE THE CONDITIONS FOR THE ANIMAL?
The sacrificial animal should be the best one, old enough, and without any defect. Rasulullah (PBUH) says: “Four types of animals are unlawful to be sacrificed: 1. Having defective eyes; 2. Having illness; 3. Limping; and 4. Skinny with no fats.” (Bukhari and Muslim)
Another Hadith reported:”Do not slaughter but a Musinnah. If it is too hard for you (to get it), then slaughter a Jadza’ah (one year of age or more) from among the sheep.” (HR Muslim).
